When Guests Hesitate
Opening the dance floor to everyone doesn't always generate the desired response. People tend to stay in their seats and be content to observe everyone else. Even the ones planning to dance may choose to wait until a few more people approach the dance floor before joining in. Because wedding receptions are usually on a tight schedule, getting the party started needs to happen pretty quickly.
Capturing the Magic Together
This problem can be solved with a simple photo request. A group photo of all the guests on the dance floor will serve 2 purposes. First, you get an amazing picture of all your guests together, and second, everyone is in the right place for the next phase of the evening! Have a ladder close by for the photographer to capture the image (a drone shot is even better if you're outdoors!), and have the DJ request that everyone comes onto the dance floor for a picture. Be sure he has the first dance song queued for the second the photo is taken.
Setting the Rhythm
Once everyone is on the dance floor and the picture has been taken, have the DJ play a familiar upbeat song that most guests will recognize. This will set the vibe and help everyone feel included. Alternately, you can have the DJ ask everyone to make a circle around the bride and groom for their first dance immediately after the group picture. This will have the guests on their feet and on the dance floor when it's their turn to participate.
